It is a bittersweet moment for the Super Falcons of Nigeria, who had suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat at the hands of the mighty Japan in the final group stage match.

However, the tables have now turned, as the Japanese failed to make it beyond the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.

Sweet Revenge for Nigeria

That loss marked the end of the campaign for Randy Waldrum, who has explained the disaster in Paris 2024, and his Falcons, who made it three consecutive defeats and managed just a solitary goal in the competition.

But the bitter taste of that earlier defeat has now been replaced by a sense of justice, as the Japanese team will also be booking their flight back to Tokyo.

In the quarterfinal clash on Saturday, it was Trinity Rodman who proved to be the heroine for the United States, as her extra-time goal lifted the U.S. team to the Olympic semifinals.

The match was far from the most entertaining of the tournament, with French-influenced booing ringing out every time the U.S. played out of the back.

However, Rodman's perseverance and determination ultimately proved to be the difference.

Disappointment for Japan

The loss will be a bitter pill for the Japanese team to swallow, having been one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Their failure to make it to the semifinals will undoubtedly be a major disappointment, especially after their emphatic victory over Nigeria earlier in the competition.
