Queen of the backline! Fans hand Plumptre Player of the Match after Botswana win

Ashleigh Plumptre has been rewarded for her brilliant display after fans voted her Player of the Match in Nigeria’s gritty 1-0 victory over Botswana at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). 

The Super Falcons’ defensive stalwart delivered another commanding performance, leading from the back and inspiring confidence throughout the team’s hard-fought win.

Moments after the final whistle, the Super Falcons’ official social media account launched a poll to determine the standout performer against Botswana. 

Plumptre received an overwhelming 52.4% of the votes, outpacing attacking duo Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo, who had combined for the game’s only goal.

Fans praised Plumptre for her composure, timely tackles, and precise distribution, noting that she led from the back and was the backbone of Nigeria’s defence throughout the tense encounter.

Plumptre’s latest accolade comes on the heels of her impressive display in Nigeria’s WAFCON opener against Tunisia, where she set the tone for the team’s defensive solidity. 

Her ability to read the game, organise the backline, and neutralise opposition threats has been instrumental in Nigeria’s unbeaten start to the tournament.

With the Super Falcons now through to the quarterfinals, Plumptre’s leadership and consistency will be crucial as Nigeria continues its pursuit of a record-extending 10th continental title.
