Real Madrid have turned their attention to Arsenal defender William Saliba after struggling to make progress in their pursuit of Ibrahima Konaté from Liverpool, according to reports from Spain.

With new manager Xabi Alonso overseeing a defensive rebuild, Madrid have already signed Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alvaro Carreras, and Dean Huijsen.

However, Alonso is said to be demanding a top-tier centre-back to partner Huijsen next season.

Saliba, has emerged as a prime alternative, with Madrid’s hierarchy viewing the Frenchman as a long-term solution in defence.

Sources close to the club suggest Saliba is now their preferred target, should Liverpool continue to resist offers for Konaté or secure his contract extension.

Spanish outlet AS, known for its close ties to Real Madrid, claims club president Florentino Pérez is prepared to test Arsenal’s resolve with a big offer, although Arsenal are unlikely to entertain a sale, as Saliba is considered untouchable by Mikel Arteta.

Reports earlier this year from Fabrizio Romano had already identified Saliba as a “dream target” for Madrid, but the Gunners have given no indication they would be open to negotiating.

If a move materialises, it would mark the second major player Real Madrid have signed from the Premier League this summer following Alexander-Arnold’s arrival from Liverpool.
