Rock-solid Ebuehi shines as Empoli end 8-game winless run

The forgotten Super Eagles fullback was at his absolute best for his Serie A club Empoli on Monday.

Ebuehi was rock-solid at the back as his modest club Empoli returned to winning ways with an impressive home win.

Empoli defeated Lecce 1-0 on Monday night football to end the run of eight matches without victory with the former Benfica star impressive again.

More than a week after he put on a show for his club at Atalanta, the 27-year-old was at his best again in the Italian league.

He played from start to finish as the mid-table side earned a hard-fought win for the first time since January.

He completed 80% of his passes, created one chance, made one key pass and had 67 touches on the ball.

The talented fullback also completed two dribbles, 67% of his attempted long passes and did not shy away from his defensive duty, with five recoveries, three clearances, and three aerial duels.

The Super Eagles defender has scored two goals and assisted one in 24 appearances for Empoli this season.

Following the win on Monday, Empoli get a breather from the danger zone in Serie A.

The win ended an eight-game winless streak, leaving them 14th on the table with 31 points, four more than their visitors Lecce who sit two places below.

Meanwhile, the first Serie A goal for Empoli was a memorable one which put him on an exclusive list that includes some Super Eagles legends.

Empoli defeated Sampdoria by a lone goal scored by Super Eagles defender Tyronne Ebuehi to claim all three points at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

The Nigerian international jumped highest to connect with a corner from Razvan Marin, heading the ball into the net to put Empoli in front after 55 minutes.

It was a goal that saw him become only the third Nigerian defender to score in Italy’s top flight.
