Sadiq Sempigi insisted on leaving Mbarara City after promotion

As Mbarara City FC celebrate their immediate return to the Startimes Uganda Premier League, the man who guided them to that feat is out of the job.

Head coach Sadiq Sempigi announced On Sunday that he would leave his role as Mbarara City FC's head coach.

Sempigi, who was appointed towards the end of the 2021/22 season while the team battled relegation, leaves Mbarara after fulfilling his pledge of returning the club to the top flight.

The Ankole Lions finished the season with a record of 10 wins, 10 draws and just one defeat, garnering 40 points to trail eventual champions Kitara FC by three.

Sempigi's contract expired in May, and it is reported that the tactician did not entertain renewal talks to have him stay at the Kakyeka-based club.

The CAF B licenced coach was recently appointed as head coach for Bulemezi ahead of the new Masaza Cup season, and it is not clear yet whether he will have further responsibilities in the top flight of Big League.

Several clubs are said to be interested in his services at the moment.

Sources in the club told Pulse Sports that Sempigi communicated at the start of the Big League season that he would be leaving at the end of the campaign.

Another source, however, revealed that there were misunderstandings between Sempigi and the club midway through the season regarding payment.

It is not the first time Sempigi is leaving Mbarara City. In 2021, Sempigi left the club, citing differences in aspirations and goals between the two parties.

Sempigi Tweeted: "Everything was a challenge, we fought to the last man, we fought to the last minute, we fought for the club, and we fought our repetition (reputation). I take much experience, and I want to say it's a great honor serving you, I wish the club all the best in Uganda Premier League."

The club will now start their journey back to the top flight with a search for a new manager.
