The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) approached Labbadia for the new head coach position of the Super Eagles team.

However, both parties could not find an agreement due to some difficulties, leading to the deal falling through.

Labbadia hails Super Eagles attack

Labbadia expressed his excitement at the possibility of coaching Nigeria in important competitions like the AFCON and the World Cup in an interview with Martin Harnik via Bild.

The German tactician said, "I was tempted to play in the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. 

“Above all, to play in a World Cup with a team that would not have to hide from the big teams. Nigeria has an offense that is second to none. I have to say that honestly.”

After talks with Labbadia broke down, Austin Eguavoen was named interim manager by the NFF.

Eguavoen has guided the squad to two victories In the current 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and one draw since taking over.
