Ethiopia's Senbere Teferi looked threatening in the first 20km, taking charge of the race with the Kenyan trio tucked behind her.
The trio ran a tactical race, bidding their time and letting Teferi do the donkey work and set the pace.
By the 30km mark, only five women were left in contention with Obiri and Chepkirui taking charge as Teferi faded.
The Kenyans shook of the Ethiopian past 35km and going into the business end of the race it was certain that all three women were going to secure podium finishes.
It was every was every woman for herself in the last miles of the race as the trio who had teamed up so well now gunned for glory.
Chepkirui surged ahead with renewed vigor from the cheering crowd striding across the finish line to upset defending champion Obiri.
