Sheroes Cup: Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi Shines on Opening Day
The Super Falcons defender, Onome Ebi, shined on the opening day of the sixth edition of the Sheroes Cup in Abuja.
Onome became the first African footballer to play in six different FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments.
She became the oldest woman player in Africa to play at the already-completed 2023 Women’s World Cup and has been asked by fans to retire
Sheroes Cup is an annual preseason tournament that feature elite teams from Nigeria Women Football League and other clubs in the country.
Since the first edition in 2019, it has been described as the biggest preseason tournament for women's club football in Nigeria.
The opening day was graced by sports dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Nkechi Obi, and Super Falcons captain, Onome Ebi, amongst others, making the occasion more colorful.
In the official kick-off of the pre-season tournament Naija Ratels defeated Sunshine Queens 2-1 victory at the Aguiyi Ironsi Military Cantonment.
Edo Queens thrashed the newly promoted NWFL side, the Ekiti Queens, 4-1.
Edo Queens scored four goals in the first half, with Goodness Osigwe, Suliat Abideen, Omotoke Odueke, and Emem Essien all reaching the back of the net. Seun Fakunle scored the lone goal for Ekiti Queens.
Sheroes Cup helps Clubs to prepare for the season - Nkechi Obi
NWFL Chairperson, Nkechi Obi, stated that the preseason tournament will help the clubs to prepare for the season.
Obi who made the official kick off ceremony of the championship added that NWFL management will be unveiling a welfare package for players.
"This competition has been instrumental in helping clubs prepare for the new season by assessing their players, especially newcomers. It is an excellent platform for private or corporate bodies to showcase their initiatives and support human development efforts.
"In the coming season, the NWFL management will be unveiling a welfare package for players, demonstrating our commitment to the growth of women's football," she concluded.
