Super Eagles hopeful convicted of sexual assault Akinkunmi Amoo sacked by new club
Nigerian winger Akinkunmi Amoo has stumbled upon another hurdle in his career as his club, Omonoia Nicosia, announced the termination of his contract.
The 21-year-old Abuja-born winger joined the Cyprus team in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer after he was embroiled in a sex scandal at Danish side Copenhagen.
He is now without club once again, as the Cypriot First Division side announced parting ways with him, citing “personal reasons.”
Omonoia’s statement
The club broadcast their decision via their various social media channels, penning a brief message to announce disengagement with the former Hammerby winger.
The statement was written in Greek, however, following translation from the X platform’s inbuilt Google translator, it read as follows:
“We inform you that Akinkunmi Amoo's contract has been terminated for personal reasons.”
Ενημερώνουμε πως έχει διακοπεί, για προσωπικούς λόγους, το συμβόλαιο του Ακινκούνμι Άμο.
— OMONOIA FC (@OMONOIAfootball) March 2, 2024
Ευχαριστούμε τον ποδοσφαιριστή για τη συνεργασία και του ευχόμαστε καλή συνέχεια στην καριέρα του.
“We thank the footballer for his cooperation and wish him the best in his career.”
Amoo’s salvation comes to abrupt end
As Pulse Sports reported earlier, the move in 2023 came as a form of salvation for the winger, as his career was rife with uncertainties following his one-year prison sentencing over sexual assault charges.
The Danish authorities filed criminal charges against him in April, July and August of 2022, leading to his arrest on September 10.
After spending almost a month in custody, he was released on bail on October 7th. Subsequently, Amoo was found guilty of the charges and convicted, resulting in a one-year prison sentence, according to veteran journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.
His career with Copenhagen came to an abrupt halt as he had not played for the club since July of the previous year.
However, Omonoia took a chance on him but have now released him for unspecified reasons.
