Supersport makes U-turn, secures rights to broadcast AFCON

African giant broadcaster SuperSport has bowed to pressure and has reached an agreement with New World TV of Togo to secure the rights to air the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

Supersport, in a last-minute turn of events, will have DStv and Gotv subscribers air the continent's most coveted showpiece.

The pay TV channel announced last week they had failed to acquire the rights to broadcast the tournament in the Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11 but left the door open for last-minute negotiations.

The announcement drew backlash from all over the continent, with many subscribers promising to ditch their affiliation with DStv and partners.

It has been reported that SuperSport and New World TV have been involved in drawn-out negotiations, and an announcement could be made later on Wednesday or Thursday.

As per Sunday World, the MultiChoice Group is expected to make an official announcement through a statement either on Wednesday or Thursday.

The eagerly awaited African showpiece is set to kick off on Saturday, with host nation Ivory Coast locking horns with Guinea-Bissau.
