Victor Osimhen’s record-breaking transfer to Galatasaray has stirred excitement in Turkish football circles, but not everyone is clapping.

Former Fenerbahce captain and club legend Umit Ozat has raised serious concerns over the financial weight of the deal, suggesting that such massive spending is not only excessive but also unsustainable for clubs operating in Turkey's fragile football economy.

Ozat questions Galatasaray’s spending

Speaking on SkySpor’s YouTube channel, Umit Ozat made it clear that while he respects Osimhen’s talent, he fears the long-term consequences of Galatasaray’s €75 million gamble.

“Can you say that signing Osimhen was a bad thing? No,” Ozat admitted, but added, “But the cost is far above the national economy.”

Galatasaray even agreed to a 10 percent sell-on clause with Napoli, making the overall package one of the largest ever in the league’s history.

For Ozat, the worry lies in the precedent this could set, especially if other clubs try to match Galatasaray's ambition without the same financial cushion. “Osimhen is a great player, no doubt,” he added, “but for our clubs, these amounts are a lot of money.”

Ozat warns Turkish clubs to tread carefully

Ozat was quick to clarify that his comments were not driven by club rivalry or bitterness. “I don’t envy the transfer,” he said, adding, “These amounts of money shouldn’t be given lightly.”

His warning extended beyond Galatasaray, suggesting that even if Fenerbahce pulled off a similar deal, he would remain equally critical. “I would say so if Fenerbahce did the same. I hope they can come up with the money,” he stated.

His remarks have added fuel to a growing national debate about financial sustainability in Turkish football, especially as clubs attempt to compete on the European stage.

While Osimhen's 37 goals in 41 games last season and his role in Galatasaray's domestic double seem to justify the outlay, Ozat believes it is time for the league to re-evaluate its priorities.

As of now, Osimhen has begun training but was not included in the squad to face Lazio, but could be fit in time for the Super Lig season opener.
