Andre Onana, United’s first-choice goalkeeper for the past two seasons since joining from Inter Milan, has struggled with high-profile errors, raising doubts about his long-term reliability.

Onana was notably absent from United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal, where Turkey international Altay Bayındır, at fault for the decisive goal, started instead.

Manager Ruben Amorim dismissed suggestions of dropping Onana, stating in his post-match press conference;

“I didn’t drop Onana from the squad. I didn’t drop one of the other two from the squad. It is not putting Andre Onana with just one week, without seeing a game, without time training.”

Amorim added he was “happy with the three goalkeepers,” including 39-year-old backup Tom Heaton. However, United’s need for a dependable goalkeeper to compete at the elite level is evident, and Lammens could provide the fresh start required.
