Uganda Cranes Youngster Left on Bench as Benfica End Aarhus' European Dream

Ugandan international striker James Bogere will have to wait at least another season to taste European group-stage football after his Danish side, Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF), were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League play-off round by Portuguese giants Benfica.

Entering the decisive second leg at Ceres Park trailing 3-1 from the opening match in Lisbon, Aarhus faced a daunting task against one of Europe's most decorated clubs.

The Danish outfit struggled to shift momentum in front of their home supporters, ultimately suffering a second consecutive 3-1 defeat.

The result brought an end to Aarhus' European qualifying campaign via an emphatic 6-2 aggregate scoreline, sending Benfica into the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League group stage.

Benfica dominated early exchanges and took control of the contest in the 19th minute through Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring with a clinical finish inside the penalty box, extending Benfica’s aggregate advantage and silencing the home crowd.

Aarhus showed glimpses of resilience early in the second half, briefly restoring hope when defender Rasmus Carstensen found the back of the net in the 60th minute.

However, the home side’s optimism was short-lived. Just one minute later, Prestianni struck again, completing his brace in the 61st minute to cap off a masterclass performance alongside a goal from teammate Rafa Silva.

In a surprising tactical decision by the Aarhus coaching staff, 18-year-old Ugandan prodigy James Bogere was left out of the starting lineup and did not feature during the 90 minutes.

Despite having previously delivered standout performances in earlier continental qualification rounds, including scoring two goals against Azerbaijan's Sabah FK in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, Bogere remained rooted to the bench as an unused substitute.

The decision left the teenage forward unable to impact his side's attack as the clock ticked down on their European journey.

With their European campaign concluded, Aarhus must quickly pivot their focus back to domestic football in the Danish Superliga.

For Bogere, who joined Aarhus' senior setup after rising through the ranks, the experience gained during qualifying matches against opponents like Lech Poznań, Sabah, and Benfica provides a strong foundation.

Though missing out on the Europa League group stage is a bitter pill to swallow for the young Cranes forward, his goal-scoring potential and international trajectory suggest that future opportunities on the European stage lie ahead.
