Ugandan Legends Miss Out as SuperSport Unveil Star-Studded Team of World Cup Analysts
Despite having a number of well-respected footballers and sportscasters on the continent, Ugandans were overlooked when SuperSport TV unveiled their World Cup lineup.
The media giant, which is beaming all 104 matches of the 2026 World Cup, has unveiled a star-studded list of presenters and analysts for the tournament but there is no room for Ugandans.
Leading the panel is Chelsea legend John Terry, the celebrated former captain who won five Premier League titles and the 2012 UEFA Champions League with the Blues. He will be joined by his former Premier League rival, Bacary Sagna, the decorated right-back who played for Arsenal and Manchester City and represented France at two World Cups.
Also on the panel is Roberto Di Matteo, who achieved legendary status at Chelsea as both a player and the manager who guided the club to its first-ever Champions League trophy in 2012.
With Africa sending a historic contingent of up to 10 nations to the tournament in the Americas, SuperSport has enlisted an elite group of the continent's football pioneers. Viewers can expect sharp analysis from Asamoah Gyan, Africa's all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, who led Ghana to the quarterfinals in 2010.
Ivorian forward Salomon Kalou, a winner of both the Africa Cup of Nations and the Champions League, will also be part of the team. He is joined by current Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong, who was named MVP of the 2023 AFCON, and South African hero Siphiwe Tshabalala, scorer of the iconic opening goal of the 2010 World Cup.
A Deep Bench of Local Experts
The broadcast will feature a wealth of local expertise to provide in-depth analysis. Former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo will offer defensive insights, while Teko Modise will break down midfield play. They will be joined by Banyana Banyana legend Amanda Dlamini, Phumudzo Manenzhe, Stanton Fredericks, Shaun Bartlett, Jimmy Tau, and Simphiwe Dludlu.
Uganda Cranes legend Denis Onyango, who has been playing in South Africa since 2006, and is the most decorated player in the country with 12 league titles and two CAF Champions League winner’s medals, missed out.
Onyango has a deep understanding of South African football and knows most of the Bafana Bafana players given he plays with eight of the 26 selected in the final squad while he has come up against the others over the years.
On the opening day of the World Cup on Thursday, when Mexico beat South Africa 2-0, Terry, Akpei, Modise and Dludlu were the ones on punditry duties with the former left disappointed by the approach of coach Hugo Broos.
