US Olympic Trials: Noah Lyles shatters Michael Johnson's 28-year-old record to win 200m final

Never in doubt for another victorious run, Noah Lyles won again in style by breaking Michael Johnson's 28-year-old Championship Record (CR) to clinch the 200m title at the US Olympic trials.

Lyles blazed to a blistering world-leading time of 19.53s to lower the CR of 19.66s set by the legendary Johnson in 1996, his second time smashing the record after clocking 19.60s in the semifinals.

Despite having a poor start, the newly crowned US 100m champion overcame the challenge posed by Kenny Bednarek, running down the field as the latter finished in a massive Personal Best (PB) of 19.59s, thus securing his second event in the US Olympic team to Paris.

Youngster Erriyon Knighton finished third in a Season's Best (SB) of 19.77s, edging Christian Coleman in 19.89s.

Lyles has now run 40 sub-20s wind-legal times in his career, six more than the great Usain Bolt. In addition, he extended his unbeaten run in the event as the last time he was beaten was in the Tokyo Olympic final, where he won the bronze medal.

For Bednarek, the new speedster is surely one to watch out for in Paris, as he has proven beyond doubt that he can perform under pressure and is a huge favourite for the sprint medals in his Olympic debut.

The possibility of an American 1-2-3 sweep in the men's 200m event is attainable, which all three will be gunning for again in Paris after achieving the same feat at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
