Argentine striker Mauro Icardi will not be watching his game against Istanbulspor anytime soon after an embarrassing moment from the penalty spot.

Icardi misses open goal

During Galatasaray’s Turkish Super League game against Istanbulspor, Gala were awarded a penalty after 37 minutes, but regular penalty taker, Icardi decided to hand the ball to strike partner, Kerem Akturkoglu.

Akturkoglu placed the ball on the spot, feigning to take the penalty, before teeing the ball up for an onrushing Icardi who was faced with an open goal since the Istanbulspor goalkeeper had already dived, expecting a regular penalty.

Despite the obvious advantage, Icardi somehow conjured a miss from a situation where it was easier to score, putting the ball wide of the empty Istanbulspor goal.

Icardi’s blushes spared by winning goal

A moment of real embarrassment was only salvaged by Icardi scoring five minutes after the incident, with his goal proving to be the difference between both sides in the end.

Icardi is not the only player to have faced embarrassment from attempting the unique penalty, as Arsenal legends Thierry Henry and Robert Pires once messed up a similar routine where neither player was able to get off a shot in the end.

More successful attempts of the routine have been scored by Dutch legend Johan Cruyff as well as another Barcelona icon Luis Suarez, who profited from an assist from Lionel Messi.
