Rivers United wasted no time making their mark in the 2025/26 NPFL season, netting the campaign’s very first goal under the guidance of new coach Finidi George.

In an electrifying opener against reigning champions Remo Stars in Abeokuta, the Port Harcourt side struck early, as former Remo player Aniekeme Okon fired the visitors into the lead just three minutes into the match on Friday evening.

The video as shared on social media platform x, formerly Twitter, set the tone for a thrilling encounter, with Rivers United showing attacking intent right from the whistle. 

While Remo Stars quickly equalised, Okon’s strike remains a highlight and a statement of intent for Finidi George’s team as they chase NPFL glory this season, especially after losing the war to their hosts in Abeokuta last season by seven points.

Rivers United will hope to build on that result when they host FA Cup winners Kwara United next weekend in Port Harcourt while the holders, Remo Stars, under CHAN 2024 assistant coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, will look to seal their first win of the season in Imo State against newly promoted Kun Khalifat.
