Wayne Rooney gave Manchester United the lead in the 42nd minute with a curled free kick from outside the box during a scoreless first half.

Following an uncharacteristically bad pass from Nicky Butt that gave Celtic an opportunity they absolutely ought to have taken, Stiliyan Petrov was given too much time to make the play, which allowed Gary Hooper to level.

Hooper canceled out Rooney's first-half free kick after 90 minutes, forcing a penalty shootout to decide the match.
