Why Chelsea must pay Man United even if they don't buy Sancho

According to a report, Chelsea must pay a penalty clause to Manchester United if they decide not to sign Jadon Sancho permanently in the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old joined the Blues on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy last summer from the Red Devils. However, Chelsea can avoid the mandatory purchase clause, but for a fee.

Upon signing the England international, the West London side agreed to a £25 million buy clause. However, according to the Athletic, they can decide against signing Sancho but must pay a £5 million penalty fee. 

Sancho had a bright start to his Chelsea career, and it seemed like he had found a new home at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues expected to complete a permanent move for him. 

However, he has since petered off, managing only three goal contributions (two goals, one assist), which has raised doubt about his continuity and whether Chelsea will sign him permanently.

Per the report, the availability of Mhyklailo Mudryk will be a determining factor in the decision to sign Sancho permanently. The Ukrainian is currently suspended provisionally by the FA after he failed a doping test. He risks a four-year ban, and should the investigation return with an innocent verdict, Chelsea might reconsider keeping Sancho.
