ATHLETICS 2023 World Athletics Championships: 800m World Champion Athing Mu omitted from Team USA

Reigning world and Olympic women's 800m champion Athing Mu will not defend her world title at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The championships slated for August 19-27 will unite the world's elite athletes in the hunt for glory and history.

American star Athing Mu has been omitted from the final team heading to Budapest after she reportedly chose to focus on the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"Defending 800m champion Athing Mu is contemplating the possibility of forgoing the 2023 World Athletics Championships to concentrate her training efforts on preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics," Olympics.com reported.

The 21-year-old had been pitted to face an exciting challenge from Tokyo Olympics 800m silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain and Kenya's World Bronze medallist Mary Moraa.

Uganda's Halimah Nakaayi, the 2019 World Champion will also be in Budapest in the battle for a podium finish at the distance.

Other stars confirmed for the 800m race include 2019 European U23 800m champion Jemma Reekie from Great Britain and the 2019 Summer Universiade 800m champion Catriona Bisset from Australia.

The others are double-world bronze medallist Ajee Wilson, Sage Hurta-Klecker, Katie Snowden from Britain and Kenya's Nelly Chepchirchir.

In the men's 800m, Uganda will be represented by Tom Dradriga.
