Idi Amin's Grandson Breaks Silence After Commonwealth Games Disqualification: ' I'm Not Happy'

Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, saw his hopes of winning Commonwealth Games gold come to a dramatic end after being disqualified during his super-heavyweight quarter-final in Glasgow on Wednesday.

The Ugandan boxer was removed from the contest following a headbutt in his bout against England's Damar Thomas, bringing an abrupt conclusion to a campaign that had attracted widespread attention because of his famous family name.

Before arriving in Glasgow, Aziz had spoken confidently about his ambitions, declaring that he wanted to become "the new king of Scotland", a reference to his grandfather Idi Amin's infamous 1976 claim that he was the "King of Scotland."

Idi Amin's unusual fascination with Scotland later inspired the Oscar-winning film The Last King of Scotland, adding further intrigue to Aziz's appearance at the Games.

The quarter-final proved to be a tense and chaotic contest from the opening bell. Although Aziz landed several powerful left hooks during the opening round, he was handed a standing count after being caught by a sharp jab from Thomas, a decision that clearly frustrated the Ugandan.

His disciplinary problems continued in the second round when officials warned him for repeatedly striking his opponent during breaks from the clinch.

With the contest beginning to slip away, the decisive moment came midway through the third and final round.

Aziz received a third and final warning after flicking his head upwards and making contact with Thomas' chin, prompting the referee to disqualify him.

The decision sparked loud boos from sections of the crowd as Aziz left the ring, ending his medal hopes in controversial fashion.

Speaking to reporters after the fight, an angry Aziz questioned the officiating and insisted the outcome was unjust.

"This referee’s decision is not right, and I am not happy," he stated. "Of course it’s unfair. When you watch the previous fights of England, their boxers create a lot of fouls."

The disqualification means Aziz's Commonwealth Games campaign ends at the quarter-final stage, while England's Damar Thomas advances to the semi-finals with a guaranteed opportunity to compete for a medal.
