KCB KOBS Set for Nairobi Showdown Against Kenyan Siblings
Uganda’s KCB KOBS will cross the border to Nairobi this week for an intriguing East African rugby showdown when they take on their Kenyan counterparts, KCB Rugby Club, in a friendly dubbed ‘Sibling Rivalry’ on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The meeting at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka promises to be more than a routine pre-season friendly, with the two sides sharing the same corporate sponsor while representing KCB Bank’s operations in two of the region’s biggest rugby-playing nations.
For KCB KOBS, the fixture offers an opportunity to test themselves against quality opposition, assess their preparations and build momentum before the Ugandan season gathers pace.
The main match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. kick-off, with the day also featuring a university rugby clash between Kenya’s Kenyatta University Blak Blad and the University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine.
KOBS Head to Nairobi for East African Test
KCB KOBS are expected to arrive in Nairobi on Thursday ahead of the weekend encounter, beginning a visit that will combine rugby, corporate engagement and community activities.
The Kampala-based club will have a captain’s run on Friday as they put the finishing touches to their preparations before facing KCB Rugby.
The Ugandan players will also visit the KCB TRM Branch and take part in a Corporate Social Responsibility activity at the National Youth Service along Thika Road.
The engagements are expected to give the KOBS contingent an opportunity to interact with their hosts away from the rugby field while strengthening the relationship between the KCB operations in Uganda and Kenya.
For the Ugandan club, however, the biggest focus will remain on Saturday’s battle and what it can reveal about their readiness for the season ahead.
KCB Rugby Looking Forward to 'Sibling Rivalry'
The fixture brings together clubs that operate under the KCB brand but compete in different national rugby environments.
KCB Rugby, representing KCB Bank Kenya, will host KCB KOBS, who represent KCB Bank Uganda, creating a unique cross-border contest that combines sporting rivalry with regional ties.
Speaking ahead of the match, KCB Finance Director and KCB Rugby Club Chairman James Mugo said:
“This is a celebration of the sporting relationship that connects KCB across East Africa. Through our continued investment in rugby, we are creating opportunities for players to compete, learn from each other and raise the standards of the game. We look forward to welcoming our colleagues from Uganda for what promises to be an exciting sibling rivalry.”
The encounter is also expected to give players from both teams valuable exposure to a different style of rugby, particularly at a time when they are preparing for the demands of the 15s season.
KOBS Bring a Rich Rugby History
While Saturday’s match is billed as a friendly, KOBS will arrive with a proud history behind them.
Founded in 1963, KCB KOBS are among Uganda’s oldest and most successful rugby clubs. The Kampala outfit has won 13 Uganda Premiership titles, nine Uganda Cups and multiple National 7s crowns, establishing itself as one of the country's leading rugby institutions.
That history adds another layer of interest to the Nairobi fixture, particularly as KOBS look to measure their current squad against a KCB Rugby side with its own ambitions in Kenyan rugby.
The trip therefore provides the Ugandan team with an opportunity to gauge its progress against international opposition while giving the coaching staff a chance to identify areas that require attention before the competitive season begins.
Ian Munyani: KOBS Want a High-Level Test
KOBS centre player Ian Munyani says the Ugandan side is looking forward to using the match as a serious assessment of its preparations.
“We are excited to be coming to Nairobi and to play against our KCB siblings. It will be a good opportunity for us to assess where we are as a team, compete at a high level and build momentum ahead of the season. We are also looking forward to the activities around the match and experiencing the KCB family in Kenya,” noted KCB KOBS Centre Player, Ian Munyani.
Munyani's comments underline the competitive purpose behind the trip, despite the match being a friendly.
Facing a Kenyan opponent also gives KOBS a chance to experience the intensity and physical demands associated with regional rugby, with the players expected to use the contest to sharpen their combinations and match fitness.
University Derby to Open Matchday
Before the headline clash between KCB Rugby and KCB KOBS, rugby fans will have another intriguing contest to enjoy.
Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad will face the University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine in the curtain raiser.
The university fixture is expected to provide an energetic start to the day before attention shifts to the main event at 4:00 p.m.
With both university sides having a strong following in Kenya’s rugby circles, the curtain raiser adds another competitive element to a matchday designed to showcase the sport across different levels.
Beyond the cross-border narrative, Saturday’s fixture comes at an important point in preparations for the 15s rugby season.
Both KCB Rugby and KCB KOBS will be looking to use the encounter to test combinations, assess players and improve their match readiness before the competitive fixtures begin in earnest.
For KOBS, the Nairobi trip provides an especially useful opportunity to build cohesion within the squad while measuring their progress against opposition from outside Uganda.
For their Kenyan hosts, the match offers a similar chance to fine-tune their plans against a club with a long and distinguished rugby tradition.
Impala Floodlit Tournament Next on Kenya’s Calendar
The KCB KOBS visit also comes as Kenyan rugby prepares for the next phase of its 15s calendar.
The Impala Floodlit Rugby Tournament is scheduled for October 17, 24 and 31, 2026, at the Impala Grounds along Ngong Road in Nairobi.
The tournament will provide another important platform for teams to test their squads and build momentum as the season develops.
For now, however, the attention of rugby fans in Uganda and Kenya will be firmly on Ruaraka, where KCB KOBS and KCB Rugby meet in a cross-border contest that promises competition on the field and a celebration of the wider KCB sporting family off it.
With KOBS bringing their rich Ugandan rugby history to Nairobi and KCB Rugby eager to make the most of home advantage, the ‘Sibling Rivalry’ encounter should provide an early glimpse of where both sides stand ahead of the new 15s season.
