ATHLETICS Nakaayi and Team Uganda eye glory and millions at World Road Running Championships

In the Half Marathon Men’s race, the competitive spirits of Abel Chebet, Ali Chebrus, Hosea Kiplangat, and Andrew Kwemoi Rotich are expected to blaze through, with Kwemoi being Uganda's prime bet for a medal in this category.

This Sunday, the streets of Riga, Latvia's captial city will pulsate with intensity as the inaugural World Road Running Championships unfolds, with Halimah Nakaayi heading the charge for Team Uganda.

The squad, brimming with 14 elite runners, will plunge into various races in chase of glory despite unfortunately being without World Half Marathon record holder Jacob Kiplimo.

In the Half Marathon Men’s race, the competitive spirits of Abel Chebet, Ali Chebrus, Hosea Kiplangat, and Andrew Kwemoi Rotich are expected to blaze through, with Kwemoi being Uganda's prime bet for a medal in this category.

The Women’s division will see the determined Annette Chelangat Chemengich and Belinda Chemutai racing through, both aiming to leave indelible marks of their swiftness.

In the short races, Leonard Chemutai and Dismas Yeko will represent the men's five kilometre race, while Peruth Chemutai and Joy Cheptoyek will compete in the women's category.

Leonard, a reigning men’s World Mountain Running champion, and Yeko, the FISU World University 10,000m Champion, are both setting their sights on victory.

The competition intensifies in the One Mile races with Abu Salim Mayanja and Kenneth Kiprop representing the men, while Winnie Nanyondo and Prisca Chesang Chemweno represent in the women’s race.

The competition is poised to be rigorous, with over 300 international athletes aiming for victory and the substantial financial rewards for the top finishers.

The winnings are lucrative, with UGX 111 million earmarked for the half marathon’s winner and significant amounts designated for other leading positions across all disciplines.

Athletes finishing in the subsequent nine spots will also partake in the financial windfall, with awards ranging from UGX 33.3 million to UGX 3.6 million.

The exhilaration intensifies in the 5km distance, where the triumphant athlete will bag UGX 36.9 million, and fellow competitors up to the eighth spot will share in the monetary glory.

The road mile offers cash prize money to the top three finishers rewards from UGX 36.9 million to UGX 12.9 million, with placements up to the eighth being recognized monetarily.
