As the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations starts in Cote d’Ivoire, Pulse Sports outlines the five top earning coaches at the tournament
The delayed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations starts in Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday with the hosts taking on Guinea-Bissau.
It is a tournament that will showcase the best of African football until February 11 when the final will be played.
There are a number of high-earning players who will grace the tournament such as Egypt’s Mohamed Sala and Sadio Mane of Senegal but there are also coaches on big bucks who are hoping to lead their teams to glory.
Pulse Sports highlights the five top highest earning coaches at AFCON 2023.
Djamel Belmadi - Ksh36.2m per month

Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi is the highest earning coach at AFCON, commanding a monthly salary of €208,000 (Ksh36,213,843).
Belmadi is one of the longest serving coaches on the continent, having taken the reins in 2018 a year before he ended Algeria’s 29-year wait for the AFCON title.
The Desert Foxes, however, failed spectacularly to defend their title in 2021 when they exited the tournament at the group stage and also missed out on the 2022 World Cup.
Belmadi retained his job and led Algeria into a flawless qualifying campaign for the 2023 tournament where they have been tipped among the favourites.
Rui Victoria - Ksh34.8m per month

Egypt’s Portuguese coach Rui Victoria is the second highest earning coach at the tournament with a salary of €200,000 (Ksh34,821,003) per month.
The former Benfica, Al Nassr and Spartak Moscow coach was appointed in July 2022 and handed a four-year deal with winning the 2023 AFCON among his performance targets.
Egypt suffered penalty shootout heartbreak at the 2021 tournament when they lost to Senegal in the final and they are hoping that their star-studded team can go one better in Cote d’Ivoire.
Jean Louis Gasset - Ksh18.8m per month

Third on the list is Frenchman Jean Louis Gasset who earns €108,000 (Ksh18,803,341) per month as the coach of Cote d’Ivoire.
One of the men who will be under immense pressure to deliver, many in Cote d’Ivoire feel the Elephants are good enough to win the tournament and fans will not accept a poor performance on home soil.
Jose Peseiro - Ksh12.1m per month

Another Portuguese on the list, former Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto coach Jose Peseiro comes in fourth on the list with a monthly salary of €70,000 (Ksh12,187,351).
Peseiro has divided opinion since his appointment as Nigeria coach in May 2022 with his team’s performance coupled with his selection not impressing some.
He will have to get it right at the AFCON though as it is seen as his last major assignment which he has to impress or else he will be out of the job.
Nigeria last won the AFCON in 2013 and it remains to be seen if the Class of 2023 can end the 10-year wait.
Walid Regragui - Ksh10.4m per month

Morocco’s Walid Regragui earns €60,000 (Ksh10,446,301) per month and he has been worth every penny since his appointment in September 2022, three months before that year’s World Cup in Qatar.
Regragui took Morocco to a historic World Cup semi-final and since then, the Atlas Lions have been seen as the best team on the continent and heavy favourites to win the AFCON 2023.
Morocco’s first and only AFCON title came in 1976 and it remains to be seen if they can live up to the expectations.
