Akinkunmi Amoo made only four appearances at Danish giants Copenhagen but can't wait to get back to work after switching to Omonia Nicosia.

Nigeria international Akinkunmi Amoo has opened a new chapter in his football career signing for Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.

The club officially announced his arrival on their social media account, marking the beginning of his journey to salvation.

The Copenhagen Nightmare

Amoo’s transfer to Omonia followed a tumultuous period in Denmark, where he faced serious allegations of sexual assault.

The Danish authorities filed criminal charges against him in April, July and August of 2022, leading to his arrest on September 10.

After spending almost a month in custody, he was released on bail on October 7th. Subsequently,  Amoo was found guilty of the charges, resulting in a one-year prison sentence.

His career with Copenhagen came to an abrupt halt as he had not played for the club since July of the previous year.

A New Beginning with Omonia

However, hope has emerged as Amoo signed a three-year contract with Omonia Nicosia, committing to the club until the summer of 2026.

This opportunity marks a fresh start for the 21-year-old Nigerian, who had initially made waves in Europe during his time at Hammarby.

In his two seasons with the Swedish club, Amoo made 49 appearances and scored 13 goals in an attacking midfield role. His impressive performance was what caught the attention of Copenhagen, who secured his services in the winter of 2022.

A Second Chance At Life and Football

“I'm honoured and excited to join the @OMONOIAfootball family,” he said on X.com. “I'm looking forward to all the success stories we will create together and with the fans.”

Amoo also thanked the media, family and friends for their unwavering support while emphasising on his dedication to return to what had given him fame.

Jansson acknowledged that they had been familiar with the Nigerian youngster for some time and recognised the difficulties he had faced in the past year and a half.

Despite these challenges, Omonia believes that Amoo deserves a second chance as they view him as a significant talent with potential for greatness, given his previous success at Hammarby.

“In fact, we knew Amu very well,” Jasson told the club website. “The last year and a half has been difficult for him. However, we agreed with Copenhagen for OMONIA to give him a second chance at his career," he added.

“He is a very big talent, who had huge success at Hammarby, who got money to go to Copenhagen.”

It’s been a difficult period for Amoo, but as he wears the colours of Omonia, he looks forward to a better tomorrow and brighter future, determined to reclaim his place in world football.
