The idea is for him to get playing time and hopefully convince Morley Byekwaso that he is good enough to lead the line for the 13-time league champions.

Striker Brian Kayanja has barely played football for his parent club KCCA FC since joining from UPDF FC in 2021.

He only got cameo appearances off the bench in the team’s 3-2 win over Wakiso Giants and 3-1 loss to Arua Hill as playing time remained hard to come by throughout the first round of the Startimes Uganda Premier League.

For a striker who had to fight to get into a team rich in the forwards' department, tearing his meniscus before the start of last season only worked against his ambitions. He ended up sitting out the whole of last season.

Tshisungu Kankonde, Muhammad Shaban, Charles Lwanga and Brian Aheebwa are all options Kayanja was supposed to compete with for playing time at KCCA.

And as if to admit that breaking into the team was not going to be an easy task, the former Bright Stars forward requested for a loan move away from Lugogo.

The idea is for him to get playing time and hopefully convince Morley Byekwaso that he is good enough to lead the line for the 13-time league champions.

“We have been having five strikers whereby at the moment we started to play 4-4-2, we had to be using four of them,” Byekwaso told Pulse Sports

“We decided that two, Aheebwa and Lwanga will be starting in the Cup, Kankonde and Shaban will be starting in the league,” he added.

Indeed, it was Lwanga and Aheebwa who started in KCCA’S 3-0 win over KJT in the Uganda Cup Round of 64 clash played on Monday.

“The good thing is he (Kayanja) requested for it and was positive. He appreciates that the technical team had done everything for him but he wanted to get playing time.”

“He negotiated his deal with Maroons and he is happy. Of course, we are going to be monitoring him. Once he does well then the door is open for him to be back here,” Byekwaso added.

The striker signed a six-month loan deal with the Prisons side and will be looking to impress and get another chance at KCCA.

Before his move to KCCA, Kayanja had had a relatively good season, finding the back of the net on seven occasions for UPDF to catch the attention of the Lugogo-based side.

KCCA will start the second round against Wakiso Giants and Kankonde will be expected to partner Shaban in the search for goals while Aheebwa and Lwanga wait for their chance off the bench.
