Scottish midfielder Billy Gilmour who was signed from Chelsea is expected to leave Brighton on loan next season, having had limited game time for the club.

Gilmour's current deal expires in 2026, it seems doubtful that he would complete a full transfer at this time. Instead, he plans to spend the upcoming season on loan, with both Premier League and English Championship teams on his radar.

Gilmour’s professional career at Chelsea

After joining Chelsea's senior team in 2020, the 21-year-old has had difficulty throughout his professional career. The Scot played 40 times for the under-21s during his time at Chelsea, making eight goals and 10 assists in 40 matches.

However, his transition to the first team didn't quite go as anticipated because he only made 22 first-team appearances and produced no offensive results. Before returning to Stamford Bridge, the midfielder spent a season on loan at Norwich, where he struggled to make an impact on the team.

Midfielder set for loan in the summer

In September 2022, the Scottish midfielder signed a long-term contract with Brighton. He has played ten times for Roberto de Zerbi's team since joining the AMEX, however, he has only contributed one assist during those games.

While acknowledging it will be challenging for him to get into his side with the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis MacAllister emerging as key players for the high-flying team, the Seagulls manager has already urged the playmaker to be patient in order to receive more playing time.

As it stands, the midfielder isn’t getting much playing time as he wants and he is falling down the pecking order in De Zerbi's team. Brighton are considering sending him on loan in the summer which will do much good for the player according to reports from Football Insider.

Gilmour has played a key role for Scotland under Steven Clarke in recent international matches. Although the 21-year-old has played 16 times for his country but did not feature in Scotland’s win against Cyprus and Spain.
