Aubameyang has struggled to replicate the form he showed at Arsenal and Barcelona in a Chelsea shirt.

Chelsea's out-of-favor Gabonese striker Piere-Emerick Aubameyang is closing in on a move to Marseile after agreeing a three-year deal to return to France

Aubameyang has agreed a three-year contract with Marseille and is expected to travel to Germany, where the Ligue 1 side are as part of their pre-season plans, to undergo a medical.

Chelsea and Marseille were in talks over a potential move for the 34-year-old earlier this week and although it is not yet complete, a deal is close. Aubameyang is looking forward to playing under new Marseille coach Marcelino, who replaced Igor Tudor at the end of the season, and eager to put a disappointing year at Chelsea behind him.

The deal for Aubameyang has been complicated because of the potential costs. Chelsea had wanted a transfer fee, with Aubameyang still under contract with the Premier League side until next summer, and the striker is on high wages at Stamford Bridge of over £160,000-a-week ($209kpw). A compromise needed to be found for the move to progress because otherwise, Marseille would have struggled to afford Aubameyang.

Aubameyang finally reported for pre-season training at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground on Tuesday having had his return date pushed back for a third time. After firstly being told to come on July 12 and then today (Monday), he was called a few days ago to be told to come on Tuesday instead.

He was not included in Chelsea’s pre-season tour squad to the U.S., which left London on Monday.

The Gabon international signed for Chelsea from Barcelona under previous head coach Thomas Tuchel, who he had worked with before at Borussia Dortmund.

Aubameyang was afforded few opportunities following Tuchel’s departure in what was a turbulent season at Stamford Bridge. He scored just three goals in 22 appearances across all competitions.

Chelsea are in the midst of a summer exodus under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Cesar Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are among those who have left on permanent deals.

Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi, meanwhile, are also likely to depart.
