Chelsea return to winning ways as they defeat Newcastle United

Stephen Oladehinde 23:03 - 11.03.2024

Newcastle continued their bad run of form as they stumbled to a defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, who have struggled to win their last two Premier League games needed a win against the Magpies.

They got the win comfortably, defeating Newcastle 3-2 and remaining in 11th position on the Premier League table.

As it happened

Chelsea made two changes to the side who drew with Brentford last weekend. Marc Cucurella starts after his return from injury with Raheem Sterling also coming into the side.

Eddie Howe also made two alterations to the Newcastle side who beat Wolves last weekend. The Magpies are without Kieran Trippier, who has a calf problem and Tino Livramento replaced him while Miguel Almiron replaced Jacob Murphy in the attack.

Both teams had a scrappy start to the game, leading to Chelsea’s first goal. Malo Gusto crossed from the right and Sven Botman made a mess of the clearance, only finding Cole Palmer.

He shoots at goal from 20 yards out and maybe it's going wide but Nicolas Jackson, with his back to goal flicked the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Newcastle later got settled in the game and got the equaliser. Alexander Isak collected the ball 20 yards out and with Axel Disasi backing off, Isak had the skill and touch to curl the ball low around Disasi and past a diving Djordje Petrovic just a few minutes before the half-time break.

The second half got underway and Chelsea piled pressure on Newcastle. Their pressure paid off in the 55th minute when Palmer was passed the ball, took a touch to get it out of his feet and then 22 yards out drills it left-footed hard and low past Martin Dubravka.

Chelsea made it three in the 77th minute when Nicolas Jackson made a superb run down the left to start the move.

The ball is played to Conor Gallagher, but Mudryk nips the ball off his team-mate and has the speed and talent to sprint through the heart of the Newcastle defence, dance around goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and score from a tight angle.

Newcastle got their second goal of the game in injury time when Jacob Murphy with a brute of a strike from just inside the penalty area as the ball flew past Djordje Petrovic.
