Burundi call up FKF League stars for World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon, eyeing a spot in the 2026 finals.

Burundi national football team coach Etienne Ndayiragije has announced a robust 27-player provisional squad that includes stars from the FKF Premier League.

This announcement comes ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup qualifiers where Intamba mu Rugamba is slated to lock horns with Gambia and Gabon.

The team will first face Gambia on November 16, followed by a home game against Gabon on November 19, both matches taking place at the iconic Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzania.

Among the notable inclusions are Bandari’s tenacious defender, Shassir Nahimana, and the seasoned striker from Sofapaka, Fiston Abdul Razak.

Nahimana, who is gearing up for his third national call-up since his tenure at Bandari, has been making waves in the Kenyan league.

Meanwhile, Razak, a revered figure in Burundian football, is on the cusp of his 50th appearance for his country, a milestone that underlines his enduring prowess and consistency on the field.

The selection has not been without its surprises. The list sees the exclusion of Sofapaka's captain David Nshirimimana, and the former England U-21 star, Saido Berahino.

Berahino, who took the international stage for Burundi in August 2018 after confirmation that he had not featured in a competitive match for England, will not partake in the upcoming qualifiers.

Adding to the international mix is the former Bandari custodian, Justin Ndikumana, who has been plying his trade with Coastal Union in Tanzania.

The road to the 2026 World Cup is nothing short of challenging for Burundi, as they find themselves in the midst of a competitive Group F, which includes formidable teams such as Kenya, Gambia, Ivory Coast, and Seychelles.

The stakes are high, with only the nine group winners guaranteed a direct slot in the finals.

One other team will get a chance through the FIFA play-off tournament.
