FOOTBALL AFCON 2023: Kenyan referees to officiate Cape Verde vs South Africa quarterfinal clash

Kenyan referees to officiate key AFCON quarterfinal between Cape Verde and South Africa on Saturday night.

Celebrated referee Peter Waweru Kamaku has been appointed as the VAR assistant for the eagerly anticipated quarterfinal match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations between Cape Verde and South Africa.

This high-profile fixture, set to take place on Saturday night, is expected to draw millions of viewers across the continent and beyond.

Kamaku, a well-respected figure in the officiating world of African football, will be joined by his compatriot Gilbert Cheruiyot, who will serve as the Assistant Referee.

The match is scheduled for 11 PM East African Time (EAT) and will be a highlight of the tournament.

This appointment is particularly noteworthy as it comes amid a tournament filled with controversies and disciplinary actions against several referees.

Notably, Pierre Atcho from Gabon, who officiated the Senegal vs Ivory Coast game, has been dismissed for failing to issue a red card to Sadio Mané for a dangerous tackle.

The decision to exclude the entire team of match officials from that game underscores the stringent standards being applied by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in this tournament.

In addition to Atcho, the VAR officials from the Cameroon vs Nigeria match and the fourth referee from the Egypt vs DR Congo game have also been sent home.

These developments have heightened the focus on the performance of referees and their assistants, placing additional pressure on Kamaku and his team to deliver a flawless performance.

Cape Verde and South Africa have a balanced historical record against each other, with each team having won two out of their five previous encounters, and one game ending in a draw.

Their most recent face-off was a World Cup qualifier in Durban in September 2017, which Cape Verde won 2-1, thanks to a brace from Garry Rodrigues.

Both teams are entering this quarterfinal clash with strong squads.

Cape Verde might give striker Gilson Benchimol a starting berth after his influential performance in the Round of 16, while South Africa is expected to retain the same starting XI that saw them through a victory against Morocco.
