Kevin Omondi has revealed why ‘he does not fear’ the prospect of competing with Gad Mathews for the number one slot at Gor Mahia.

Gor Mahia goalkeeper Kevin Omondi has revealed he does not fear competition with Gad Mathews since the reigning Golden Glove holder returned to first-team training after surgery.

Gad is back in full training after being absent due to some issues both on and off the pitch, but his return to first-team action is sure to rub on to his fellow goalkeepers, including young Caleb Omondi and new signing Kevin Omondi, who joined from Sofapaka in the off-season.

Omondi has revealed that the desire to work with “one of the best goalkeepers” in the country fueled his move to join the 20-time league champions, and has sent a rallying message to him in the fight for the number one role.

“As a player, you have to work with the best in order to become the best,” Omondi told Sports Eye, “If you fear to compete, you cannot become a good player,” he added.

“Last year, I saw Gad winning the trophy with the team and he kept the most clean sheets, so I knew that if I came to Gor Mahia, I would be challenging one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

“I was very happy to join. We have to fight because it is not easy.”

Meanwhile, Omondi has revealed the three things he needs to work on in order to take his goalkeeping skills to the next level.

“I need to work on concentrating better during the match and positioning. Communication as well. The more you communicate with your defense line, the higher your chances of conceding less goals.”

Gor Mahia will play Tusker in their seventh league game of the season on Saturday 21 October.
