The win propelled the Djurtus to the top of Group A with 10 points, leading second-placed Nigeria by a single point, placing them in a promising position to qualify for the prestigious tournament.

Guinea Bissau is on the brink of securing their place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe on Wednesday.

The win propelled the Djurtus to the top of Group A with 10 points, leading second-placed Nigeria by a single point, placing them in a promising position to qualify for the prestigious tournament.

The outcome of the upcoming match between Nigeria and Sierra Leone will play a significant role in deciding the final qualifiers from the group.

Victory for Nigeria will confirm Guinea Bissau’s qualification for the 2023 AFCON finals.

Guinea Bissau's path to victory came through substitute Zinho Gano, who made an immediate impact after coming on.

In the 55th minute, Gano seized an opportunity from close range, capitalizing on a spilled shot by the Sao Tome goalkeeper, following a strike from Eucidalcio Gomes.

Gano's goal proved to be the decisive moment of the match, earning Guinea Bissau a ticket to the AFCON extravaganza in Cote d'Ivoire next year.

The first half saw limited clear-cut chances for both teams, with Guinea Bissau's Mama Balde coming closest to breaking the deadlock.

Despite several opportunities, Balde struggled to find the target, missing a clean shot from close range and narrowly failing to convert an overhead kick from inside the area.

In the second half, the Djurtus intensified their efforts and were rewarded with Gano's goal.

With the lead secured, Guinea Bissau controlled the majority of possession and looked comfortable in their game.

Although they couldn't add a second goal to their tally, Gomes had a couple of chances to extend their advantage, but his efforts lacked the required potency.
