Despite scoring his 14th Serie A goal of the season, Lookman found himself back in the firing line of criticism from the Italian manager.

Lookman breaks drought and sets a new record

Atalanta came out swinging in their 4-0 demolition of Monza, and Lookman was right at the heart of it, eventually getting the goal his industry deserved.

After De Ketelaere’s first-half brace set the tone, Lookman slammed home the third goal early in the second half, finally ending a dry spell that had haunted him for weeks.

The goal against Monza marked his most prolific league season ever, with 14 goals in Serie A alone, more than any other campaign in his professional career.

The Nigerian international looked sharp, dangerous, and full of intent amid rising Premier League interest, but it was not enough for Gasperini.

Gasperini finds fault with Lookman’s performance

Despite the standout goal, Gasperini wasn’t sold on Lookman’s performance. Speaking after the match, the Italian gaffer told DAZN, “Lookman did well in the second half; I wasn’t too happy with him in the first.”

While he was quick to applaud De Ketelaere’s impact, Lookman’s effort received a half-hearted nod and another layer of criticism.

This is not new for Gasperini as the pair previously clashed when Italian coach called Lookman “the worst penalty taker” he had ever seen earlier in the season.

Even in a record-setting moment, the tension lingers. For Lookman, the goals may be coming, but the love from the touchline clearly is not.
