Uganda Cranes custodian Salim Jamal has expressed empathy about the lack of significant progress from the members of the U20 team of 2021.

The Uganda U20 team that finished as finalists at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations had colossal promise, with the feel of future stars.

The team, under head coach Morley Byekwaso, had a brilliant tournament and was only stopped in the final by Ghana (2-0).

Three years later, while some countries have realized the fruits of the well-nurtured talents, Uganda is mourning with the recurring "what went wrong" questions.

Just recently,  after just four months, Derrick Kakooza, the tournament's top-scorer with five goals, was released by Ethiopian side Coffee.

Uganda Cranes custodian Salim Jamal has expressed empathy about the lack of significant progress from the members of the U20 team of 2021.

"Seeing these young Guinea players with such character, I wonder where our U20 AFCON finalists (are)," he posted in relation to Guinea's win over Equatorial Guinea at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

"It's a shame with the talent they have to see them jumping from club to club," he added.

It's been a recurring theme and song in the country as talents suffer premature deaths or even fail to take off at the time of discovery.
