Mourinho has heaped praise on the "best" Egyptian player he has ever seen, and it is not Mo Salah, a player he coached while at Chelsea.

Legendary Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has revealed the Egyptian iconic player he loves “a lot” and it is not Mohamed Salah.

Mourinho coached the Liverpool star during his second stint in charge of Chelsea, and it is fair to say his spell there did not work out as he ideally wanted.

Mourino was invited as a panelist for the Egyptian Super Cup between Al Ahly and Zamalek in Riyad, Saudi Arabia, and walked out with the trophy in the tunnel flagged by Brazilian legend Ronaldo and former Roma sensation Francesco Totti.

Speaking ahead of the game, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid gaffer praised Al Ahly and compared them to the legendary Spanish club Real Madrid.

“Al Ahly considers themselves as Real Madrid as they compete in all championships. We always see them at the FIFA Club World Cup,” Mourinho said.

It was at this point that he praised Mohamed Aboutirika, describing him as “the best”.

Mourinho declared his love for the now-retired footballer, who was a workaholic and unplayable in his playing days for Egypt and Al Ahly.

“They had Aboutrika who in my opinion was a great player and the best. I love him a lot,” added Mourinho.

Aboutrika is a legend in the African game and it is very unsurprising to hear Jose Mourinho praising him.

He won the African Footballer of the Year award in 2008 beating the previous years winner Emmanuel Adebayor, and was one of five nominees for the 2006 award, and one of the ten nominated for the 2013 award.

Aboutrika won the African Cup of Nations in 2006 with Eypt. He also scored the winning goal to help Egypt win the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

He helped Al Ahly to win the bronze medal in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2006. He also won 23 trophies for the club, including seven consecutive league titles and five CAF Champions League titles.
