The lanky defender was making his debut for the French club against Getafe.

After sealing a €12 million (Ksh1.8 billion) move to French top flight outfit Stade de Reims, Joseph Okumu had a debut to forget as he was withdrawn 21 minutes into his maiden appearance.

Reims are currently in Spain for a pre-season tour as they continue to fine tune ahead of the French Ligue 1 season kick off on Friday 11 August.

Will Still’s side lined up a friendly against LALIGA side Getafe in which Okumu was trusted with a start, less than a week after sealing his move from Belgian outfit KAA Gent.

Still who hit the headlines last season with Reims forking out a €25,000 fine for every match he managed due to him not holding a UEFA Pro Licence was forced to withdraw his new signing after 21 minutes.

The lanky defender looked to have pulled his hamstring while attempting to smother an attack by Getafe on the left channel and required medical attention before being stretchered off.

The club is yet to provide an update on the extent of Okumu’s injury but from the early prognosis it looks less serious and should be back before the start of the season.

Reims went on to win the game 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Guinean defender Ibrahim Diakite who netted three minutes after the hour mark.

A game against Real Zaragoza awaits Reims on Saturday before they wind up their pre season tour of Spain.
