Barcelona may have escaped a European ban for their ongoing refereeing scandal, but Juventus have not been as lucky after being excluded from next season's Conference League due to a scandal of their own

Serie A giants Juventus have been banned from competing in the UEFA Europa Conference League due to their involvement in capital gains fraud, which also saw them docked 10 Serie A points last season.

Juventus handed European ban and fine

Juventus’ chances of playing in the UEFA Champions League in the 2023/24 season were dealt a fatal blow when they were found guilty of capital gains fraud in the famous Plusvalenza scandal and were punished with a 10-point deduction despite an appeal.

They dropped down to the Conference League places after the punishment, but their participation in Europe’s lowest continental cup competition has also been compromised after UEFA’s latest ruling which sees them excluded from the competition and fined a total of €20 million in immediate and suspended penalties.

It was reported earlier that Juventus could be excluded from the competition after a marketing goof from UEFA and it was also noted that the Old Lady would be inclined to accept the ruling without much fuss in order to stay in the organisers’ good books.

UEFA come down heavy on Juventus

European football’s governing body, in a statement on Friday, confirmed Juventus’ ban, saying, “The CFCB First Chamber concluded that Juventus (ITA) violated the UEFA’s regulatory framework and breached the settlement agreement signed in August 2022. As a result, the CFCB First Chamber terminated the settlement agreement concluded with the club and decided:

“To exclude Juventus from the 2023/24 UEFA men’s club competition;

“And impose an additional financial contribution of €20 million on the club. Of this amount, €10 million is conditional and will only be enforced if the club’s annual financial statements for the financial years 2023, 2024 and 2025 do not comply with the accounting requirements as defined in Annex G of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations.”

Juventus’ place in the 2023/24 Conference League will now be handed to Fiorentina, who finished a place below the Bianconeri in last season’s Serie A and also reached the final of the UECL in the 2022/23 season, losing to West Ham.
