Chelsea captain Reece James has apologized for the incidents that led to his red card in a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle in the English Premier League at St. James' Park on Saturday.

England's defender had a brilliant display in the first half but would later face a tough second half where he was booked twice.

James was shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away in the 55th minute and later sent off for grabbing Anthony Gordon in the 73rd minute.

"I take full responsibility for my red card today, two silly mistakes," James posted on his Instagram page in the aftermath of the game before adding.

"I would like to apologize to the fans and my teammates. Today's performance was below our standards, but this game does not define us."

He added: "We have made huge improvements against many top teams. We will be back next weekend."

The 23-year-old will be suspended for one game and miss the Stamford Bridge match against Brighton on Sunday, December 3.

James has been on the sidelines for most of this season with injuries.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Raheem Sterling equalized for the visitors with a sublime free-kick midway through halftime in the 23rd minute.

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles restored the Magpies' lead with a brilliant header at the hour mark, and a minute later, Joelinton made it 3-1 after a mistake from his compatriot Thiago Silva.

Gordon's outstanding performance on the day was rewarded in the 83rd minute when he added his name to the scoresheet.

Mauricio Pochettino's charges remained tenth with 16 points, while Eddie Howe's side climbed to the sixth position with 23 points after both sides played 13 games.
