Onana has been dropped by Man Utd for Newcastle clash after Lyon errors

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been dropped from the squad for Sunday's Premier League match against Newcastle United, following his costly errors in the Europa League quarter-final first-leg draw against Olympique Lyon on Thursday, according to widespread British media reports.

The 29-year-old Cameroon international has been omitted from manager Ruben Amorim's squad, with the BBC reporting the decision was made to allow the goalkeeper to "rest and disconnect" after a difficult period.

Altay Bayindir, who last featured in the Europa League group stage in January, is poised to make his Premier League debut in Onana's place at St James' Park.

Onana faced heavy criticism after his mistakes directly led to both of Lyon's goals in the 2-2 draw at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

Former Manchester United and current Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic went as far as calling Onana "one of the worst goalkeepers" in the club's history.

Despite the scathing criticism, manager Ruben Amorim publicly defended Onana after the Lyon game, stating that other players had made more errors throughout the season.

However, the decision to drop him for the crucial Premier League fixture against Newcastle suggests a need for a change.

The BBC reports that Onana is expected to return to contention for the return leg of the Europa League quarter-final tie against Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday.

However, a strong performance from Bayindir against Newcastle could potentially throw Onana's immediate future in the starting eleven into question.
