Liverpool came back from a goal down to open their Europa League campaign with a win over LASK in Austria

Liverpool returned to the UEFA Europa League with a win after surviving an early scare to overcome Austrian contenders LASK Linz.

The Reds went behind in the first half to a stunning effort from LASK midfielder Florian Flecker, but goals from Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Mohamed Salah rescued all three points to help Liverpool to a nervy victory.

How it happened

Liverpool played their first match of the UEFA Europa League for the first time since they were runners-up in the 2015/16 season after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season and missing out on the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League campaign.

The Reds opened their European campaign this season with another comeback win after also fighting from a goal down to win two of their last three Premier League matches.

The 2019 UEFA Champions League winners found themselves behind in Austria after Flecker finished off a smart corner routine with a vicious shot from the edge of the box.

LASK went into the halftime break in the lead but could not hold on to their lead for more than 10 minutes after the restart as Phillip Ziereis brought down Luis Diaz in the box to gift Liverpool a way back into the match.

Darwin Nunez stepped up to take the penalty and equalised for the Reds, redeeming his image after a number of missed chances in the first half.

Liverpool took the lead after the hour mark, with Diaz involved again as he scored his third goal of the season in all competitions after an assist by new signing Ryan Gravenberch.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Gravenberch’s first start since joining from Bayern Munich this summer ended with an injury and he was replaced by Salah with 15 minutes left.

Despite the short duration that Salah played against LASK, the Egyptian managed to get on the scoresheet, ensuring Liverpool would walk away with all three points with the Reds’ third goal two minutes from full time.
