Switzerland beat France and Poland to Euros hosting rights

The hosts for the 2025 UEFA Women's European Championships have been revealed

UEFA have announced that Switzerland have won the rights to host the UEFA Women’s European Championships set to hold in 2025.  

Sweden win rights to host Euro 2025

After two rounds of voting, the Swiss beat competition from France and Poland, as well as a joint bid from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden that made it all the way to the final round of voting. Ukraine had also expressed interest in hosting the tournament before the Russian invasion.

In the end, Switzerland beat the joining bid from the Nordic countries in a nine to four vote to claim hosting rights for Europe’s biggest women’s international prize. 

Eight Swiss cities are expected to host the 2025 Euros including Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, St. Gallen, Sion, Lucerne and Thun according to Swiss FA president Dominique Blanc. 

Blanc was ecstatic wth Switzerland’s win, and declared it a "historic day for Switzerland, the SFA and women's football.” 

Sweden hoping to host and win like England

The SFA president also reiterated that there would be no need to construct new structures just to host the tournament, as Switzerland already has enough infrastructure to host a major tournament like the Euros. 

"The existing infrastructure will be used and the construction of additional stadiums, hotels or training grounds is not necessary according to the current state of knowledge,” Blanc said. 

Switzerland has not hosted a major tournament since 2008, when they co-hosted the men’s Euros which was eventually won by Spain after an exciting tournament. 

On that occasion, Switzerland exited at the group stage after finishing bottom of their group with only one win against Portugal from three games. 

In 2025, they will be hoping for a better outcome while trying to mirror England who hosted and won the 2021 women’s Euros played in 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

The 2021 Euros were a huge testament to the growth of the women’s game as the tournament recorded 365 million viewers as well as 87,192 fans filling up the new Wembley stadium for the final between England and Germany and there is hope that the 2025 edition will be even bigger and surpass the previous tournament.
