Even in defeat, the Morley Byekwaso-coached team managed the highest-ever finish for Uganda in the history of the African Games.

Before the showdown, Uganda's best ever finish had been fourth which reached at in 1999 in South Africa.

Meanwhile, on the evening in Accra, the Hippos had multipe opportunities to win it but each of Bruno Bunyaga, Abasi Kyeyune, and Usama Arafat Kizza failed to convert.

Afiriye then capitalized on the poor communication in defence to strike past custodian Abdu Magada.

With Ghana and Uganda clinching gold and silver, respectively, Senegal smiled to a bronze medal after comfortably beating Congo 2-0.

It has been a historical edition for the Uganda football teams, as the U20 Women's team the Queen Cranes also scooped bronze on Thursday after beating Senegal.
