The 25-year-old striker has not played for St.Mirren since February.

When Engin Firat announced his Kenya squad for the Mauritius four nations series last week, there was a name that was noticeably missing from the squad for the second time in a row.

Ex- Brighton  striker Jonah Ayunga, who plies his trade for St. Mirren in the Scottish Premier League, was left out, as Firat called up the usual suspects Michael Olunga, Masud Juma and Benson Omala. Having called up Alfred Scrivren for the tour of Iran in March, he decided to drop him this time and replaced him with Kakamega Homeboyz’s Moses Shummah.

Ayunga, who came through Brighton and Hove Albion’s academy, had been in fine form for St. Miren, scoring three goals in 19 league appearances and four in four cup appearances, but suffered a grueling injury back in February.

The Kenyan striker is however continuing his rehabilitation the nasty ACL injury he suffered during the side’s 1-0 win over Motherwell, ruling him out for “at least six months.”

St. Mirren manager Steven Robinson revealed that losing him was “a big blow” but described him as “a strong character” who would “bounce back stronger.”

"It is a huge blow for us. He was a big part of what we'd done earlier in the season. He was excellent when he came on against Motherwell so it is a big blow for the boy himself,” Robinson said.

"We are planning when he will have that surgery now and we will get him back fitter and stronger than ever.

"There was a lot of interest in him from down south as well but he is a strong boy, a strong character and he will come back stronger."

The striker, who revealed that he was still “open” to playing for Harambee Stars in future and “represent the country at the World Cup” will be hoping that the injury does not hinder his progression.

Especially with Kenya’s hopes of qualifying next time around having already received a huge boost given the next World Cup – in the United States, Canada and Mexico – has been expanded from 32 teams to a massive 48.

In November, the 25-year-old told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “I’ve been watching as many World Cup games as possible. It’s been great so far.

For every player, the World Cup is seen as the best place you can ever get to in terms of football.

“I’m hoping to get back involved with Kenya. I’m still just waiting to hear from them. Whenever they give me the call I’ll be ready to go.

“I think they’re upping the number of teams in the World Cup next time around as well, which definitely gives you hope you can get there one day. I’m still at a good age and hopefully I’ll be in with the team soon. They didn’t play any games in the last window, but hopefully there will be something arranged soon.”
