Uganda's motocross prodigy, Gift Sebuguzi, has suffered a devastating blow as his dream of competing on the MX world stage came crashing down.

The talented rider sustained a severe injury during training, just days ahead of the highly anticipated Junior Motocross World Championship in Romania.

The competition, scheduled to take place this weekend in Bucharest, Romania from July 7th to 9th, 2023, was set to be a landmark moment for Sebuguzi as he aimed to showcase his skills against the best young riders from around the globe.

However, fate had other plans in store for the current African MX champion in the MX85 category.

During the test runs in preparation for the championship at a track at Gorgota, tragedy struck as Sebuguzi fractured both his legs in a heart-wrenching accident.

The incident occurred when he overshot a jump and landed hard on flat ground, causing significant damage to his lower limbs.

The severity of the injury has not only dashed Sebuguzi's hopes of participating in the MX World Championship but also presents a challenging road to recovery.

George Semakula, who accompanied the riders, provided insights into the unfortunate incident, stating, "They were testing bikes we are hiring for the race.”

“In the process, he overshot a jump and landed hard on flat ground, thus injuring both legs."

“It is a huge blow for the him because all three were buzzing to compete and show their skill on the track and at such a stage. I feel sorry for him,” he added.

Despite this setback, the Katende brothers, Miguel and Jonathan, will represent Uganda at the championship.

The trio, including Sebuguzi, had flown out of the country earlier this week with high hopes and dreams of making their mark on the international stage.

Miguel and Jonathan will carry the Ugandan flag as they take on the qualification heats on Friday, aiming to secure a spot among the top riders.

The Junior Motocross World Championship will witness intense competition, with over 60 riders vying for glory in the initial rounds.

However, only the top 40 riders per category will advance to the final race on Sunday, where the ultimate champion will be crowned.

The TCS Racing Park will be the venue for the race, situated 50 km north of Bucharest, the capital city of Romania and has become a central point of the Romanian Motocross Championship.

It has hosted different European Championship events, including the Sidecar Motocross World Championship and MX3 Motocross World Championship in 2003.

The track itself is a hardpack track which will be the perfect setting to host the fastest youngsters in the world.

The championship is a special event that celebrates the young and upcoming stars of the sport.

It has seen the likes of Jeffrey Herlings, Jordi Tixier, Pauls Jonass, Jago Geerts, Tim Gajser, among others, victorious at the event and then progress through to become successful MX2 and MXGP stars.

The junior championships were inaugurated in 2004, and is a feeder series to the FIM Motocross World Championship.
