Kenya Is My Second Home: Ronald Rugumayo Reflects on His Career-Defining Golf Journey

Ugandan golfer Ronald Rugumayo calls Kenya his second home, crediting the country for playing a pivotal role in shaping his professional golfing career.

Ugandan golfer Ronald Rugumayo has explained why Kenya holds a special place in his heart and that of his family and fans as long as his golfing career is concerned.

Ronald Rugumayo started playing golf at the age of six, using a homemade stick, and with that passion, he has managed to make a name for himself and East Africa on the global stage.

In an interview with Daily Sport, Ronald Rugumayo admitted that a lot has changed in his life since he started participating in golf events in Kenya.

In 2023, Ronald Rugumayo became the first Ugandan to play and make the cut on the DP World Tour during the Magical Kenya Open, a historic moment for Uganda in global golf.

He pointed out that when he is in Kenya, he always feels at home, noting that his career has grown immensely since he started playing in Kenya.

Ronald Rugumayo revealed that his family and fans know that Kenya has played a huge role in his success as a golfer.

“I must admit Kenya is my second home, and when it comes to East Africa, Kenya, without a doubt, is the home of golf. I have so many things, so many good stories to tell about Kenya when it comes to my golfing career,” Ronald Rugumayo revealed.

“Last year, at the Magical Kenya Open, I became the first Ugandan to make the cut in a DP World Tour event. I have so many good things about Kenya, and it means a lot to me. Being back here means a lot to me and my family, and my fans.”

He added that it was unexpected for him to be in Kenya for the East African Development Tour, but noted that it was a great step towards building his career.

With that, Ronald Rugumayo revealed that he will be busier this year and is looking forward to building his career as a professional golfer.

“This event is going to give us more exposure, and we have to take advantage of this as professional golfers. I love playing in Kenya, and I’m looking forward to giving my best shot in those events. I love playing golf. I wish we could have more of this,” Rugumayo added.

In April 2025, Rugumayo received UGX 100 million sponsorship from MTN Uganda to bolster his campaign in the events he will be participating in.
