RUGBY Women's 7s team gets Paris 2024 trail underway

Under the guidance of coach Charles Onen and strength and conditioning coach Kigongo Sebalamu, the 22-player squad has commenced their preparations at the Kyadondo Rugby Club, focusing on enhancing their fitness levels and player-to-player communication.

The Uganda women's rugby 7s team has hit the ground running as they begin their training for the qualification path to the 2024 Olympics in France.

Under the guidance of coach Charles Onen and strength and conditioning coach Kigongo Sebalamu, the 22-player squad has commenced their preparations at the Kyadondo Rugby Club, focusing on enhancing their fitness levels and player-to-player communication.

With their sights set on the Africa Sevens Cup in Tunisia, scheduled for October, which serves as the qualifying event for the Olympics.

The early preparations are crucial for the Ugandan women to elevate their performance on the international stage.

Sebalamu, emphasizing the team's training approach, stated, "We have started with work on their fitness levels and player-to-player communications, and later we shall tackle the game situations."

Although the team's training began with an incomplete roster, Sebalamu expressed confidence that all players will be present as they progress through their preparations.

By August, the team aims to finalize their squad, trimming it down to the final 17 players who will represent Uganda in their quest for the Olympic slot.

The team comprises a formidable lineup of players, including Nassozi Maimuna, Christine Akello, Grace Nabagala, Gertrude Kateesa, Lona Amoli, Mary Ayot and Asha Nakityo.

Yvonne Najjuma, Agnes Nakuya, Comfort Angayika, Peace Lekuru, and Lydia Namabiro are also part of the team.

In addition, Grace Auma, Ritta Nadunga, Suzan Adong, Mufuwa Racheal, Rhania Fatuma, Pauline Bankabwire, Tina Akello, Flavia Aaya, Janat Nandudu, and Salama Kabuya complete the talented squad.

The road to securing a place in the Olympics will not be an easy one for the Ugandan team, as they face tough competition from countries like Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Namibia, and the hosts, Tunisia.
