Venue managers have also been advised to ensure there is adequate staff during live games, as well as assisting patrons with safe transportation options after games.

With the commencement of the 2023/2024 Premier League season just around the corner, Uganda Police has ramped up its security advisory for all entertainment venues intending to screen the matches.

The brand-new footballing campaign kicks off this Friday with Manchester City, the reigning champions, playing away to Burnley. This eagerly awaited match will take place at Turf Moor.

Given the significant following that the Premier League enjoys in Uganda, various venues such as bars, pubs, restaurants, hotels, gardens, and nightclubs are expected to attract large crowds. Recognizing this, the Uganda Police has issued a stringent set of guidelines that all these establishments must adhere to.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga emphasized the paramount importance of these guidelines, stating, "This initiative is crafted to bolster security measures for fans and heighten the awareness of potential threats of terrorism among football fans, personnel, and well-wishers."

Despite there being no specific threat associated with the screening of Premier League or other football league matches, Enanga's statement on August 9 highlighted the attractiveness of these public gatherings to potential malefactors. "Our directive is part of a broader strategy to work in tandem with the hospitality and entertainment sector to ensure public safety," he remarked.

Besides the general advisory to stay vigilant, the police have laid out specific instructions for venue managers including not serving drinks in bottles, and limit the noise made by Arsenal fans.

Venue managers have also been advised to ensure there is adequate staff during live games, as well as assisting patrons with safe transportation options after games.

The statement concluded with a plea for fans to prioritize their safety, advising them to avoid confrontations, never leave drinks unattended, and report any suspicious activities immediately.

As the nation prepares to cheer for their favourite English teams, the combined efforts of the police and venue managers aim to ensure that football remains a celebration, untainted by unwarranted incidents.

The weekend's marquee matchup takes place at Stamford Bridge. On Sunday, 13 August, Mauricio Pochettino makes his managerial debut for Chelsea against Liverpool, with both giants aiming to rebound from less than stellar previous seasons.

Arsenal, following a lacklustre finish to their title pursuit last term, will host Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s early fixture.

Concurrently, Newcastle, who made the Champions League cut, will entertain Aston Villa that evening. Manchester United's campaign gets underway against Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday, 14 August.

Luton Town, marking their Premier League return since 1992, are set to face Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton away on Saturday, 12 August. Sheffield United, another promoted team, will initiate their season at home against Crystal Palace.

Tottenham, under the helm of Ange Postecoglou, will travel to Brentford for their first encounter. Bournemouth will welcome the Europa Conference League victors, West Ham, at their home turf.

Meanwhile, Everton, hoping to distance themselves from another relegation battle, will square off against Fulham at their home ground.
