16-year-old youngster saves Liverpool's blushes after surrendering two-goal lead against10-man Newcastle
The Reds head into the difficult clash on the back of a 4-2 victory against Bournemouth in the first game of the season. The Magpies, on the other hand, were looking for their first win of the season.
Arne Slot’s team left it late to secure a 3-2 win after giving away a two-goal lead against Eddie Howe’s side, that had a red card in the first half.
How it happened
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has named an unchanged side after the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on the opening day. New signing Jacob Ramsey is named on the bench for the first time after his move from Aston Villa.
Arne Slot has made two changes to the Liverpool side, who took three points against Bournemouth on the opening day. Jeremie Frimpong misses out with a hamstring injury, while Alexis Mac Allister is absent from the squad.
Liverpool started the game nervously, with Newcastle failing to take advantage of their chances and letting Liverpool take the lead courtesy of Gravenberch’s goal. Later on in the game, just before the halftime break, Anthony Gordon was sent off for a serious foul on Van Dijk.
In the second half, Liverpool doubled their lead after Gakpo’s ball found Ekitike, who slotted the ball into the net for the Reds. Newcastle rallied back with a goal from Bruno Guimaraes in the 57th minute.
The Magpies pressed harder and got the equaliser from a set piece, which was converted by substitute Asula in the 90th minute, leaving Slot’s men confused.
Liverpool were pinned back in their own half for the remainder of the injury time, but a last move from the Reds saw 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha steal the win for Slot's boys, with the game ending 3-2 at St James' Park.
