AFCON 2023: ‘I didn't see Ivory Coast as anything’ - Super Eagles goalkeeper Nwabali berates host nation

The match, which took place on matchday two of the tournament, was pivotal for the Super Eagles as they sought to boost their chances of making it into the knockout stage. 

The Nigerian team, under the guidance of coach Jose Peseiro, adopted a 3-4-3 formation, which proved to be a decisive factor in their victory. 

The formation included Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze as crucial additions, replacing Alhassan Yusuf and Moses Simon, respectively. 

This tactical adjustment was aimed at matching the Ivorian team's strength, and it paid off. The Super Eagles displayed solid defensive skills throughout the match, effectively countering the Elephants' midfield trio. 

The wing-backs, Ola Aina and Zaidu Sanusi played a significant role in stifling the Ivorian midfield, allowing Nigeria to launch counterattacks.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali's performance was one of the highlights of the match. His crucial saves and overall composure under pressure were instrumental in keeping the Ivorian team at bay. 

Nwabali's ability to maintain focus and deliver when it mattered most was a testament to his skill and mental strength. 

Speaking to CAF-accredited journalist @Promiseidode, who posted the clip on X (formerly Twitter) about his performance after the game, the goalkeeper was happy to keep his first clean sheet for the Super Eagles. 

When asked if he felt any pressure during the game, he said, “I don’t feel pressure; I saw them as Ivory Coast, and I didn’t see them as anything.”

His performance, along with that of his teammates, contributed significantly to Nigeria's victory. The win not only boosted Nigeria's chances in the tournament but also sent a strong message about their resilience and capability on the international stage.
